??On weekends we have free time and I use it to explore Galicia.\u00a0 This weekend I went to Pontevedra. Part of the\u00a0Portuguese Camino de Santiago, the Spanish city of Pontevedra has Roman origins, plenty of traditions and amazingly old buildings but it is also a vibrant city waiting to be discovered.<\/p>\n
“The Portuguese Way is one of the most popular itineraries of the Camino de Santiago. After its beginning in the south of Portugal and passing through the cities of Lisbon and Porto, this Portuguese road enters Galicia through the municipality of Tui. There is also a variant of this traditional route along the coast that starts from the city of Porto and enters Galicia through the mouth of the river Mi\u00f1o, in A Guarda, and later in the town of Baiona. From Redondela, both routes join towards the city of Pontevedra.”<\/p>\n

Since Pontevedra is on the way to Santiago de Compostela, it is full of pilgrims! And many of them speak English. Putting all these lucky factors together I decided to book a bed in an Albergue de peregrinos<\/span> and have a closer glance into the pilgrim’s routine.<\/p>\n When I arrived at the hostel I had to wait for a receptionist to come for a check-in. While I was waiting for her, I met Jessica<\/strong> and Richard<\/strong> – pilgrims from the Netherlands, Amsterdam. After a friendly chat, we decided to arrange a time for a quick interview. Jessica decided to the Camino with her father Amstelveen who is 75 years old!<\/p>\n Okay… so \ud83d\ude42 Where did you start the Camino?<\/strong> What was the reason you decided to do the Camino?<\/strong> What do you like about the Camino?<\/strong> Is there something that you don\u2019t like about the Camino?<\/strong> Anyway…Can you share an experience or adventure that occurred along the Camino?<\/strong> How did you know about the Camino?<\/strong> What do you think about the hostels for pilgrims?<\/strong> Me:<\/span> Thank you for your time and for sharing your story with me \ud83d\ude42<\/em><\/p>\n We talked a bit more and wished each other all the best. They inspired me to go on the Camino one day by myself \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n ?? Los fines de semana tenemos tiempo libre y lo aprovecho para explorar Galicia. Este fin de semana fui a Pontevedra. Parte del Camino de Santiago portugu\u00e9s, la ciudad espa\u00f1ola de Pontevedra tiene or\u00edgenes romanos, muchas tradiciones y edificios incre\u00edblemente antiguos, pero tambi\u00e9n es una ciudad vibrante que espera ser descubierta.<\/p>\n \u201cEl Camino Portugu\u00e9s es uno de los itinerarios m\u00e1s populares del Camino de Santiago. Tras su inicio en el sur de Portugal y su paso por las ciudades de Lisboa y Oporto, esta carretera portuguesa entra en Galicia por el municipio de Tui. Tambi\u00e9n existe una variante de esta ruta tradicional por la costa que parte de la ciudad de Oporto y se adentra en Galicia por la desembocadura del r\u00edo Mi\u00f1o, en A Guarda, y posteriormente en la localidad de Baiona. Y muchos de ellos hablan ingl\u00e9s. Juntando todos estos factores, decid\u00ed reservar una cama en un Albergue de peregrinos y echar un vistazo m\u00e1s de cerca a la rutina del peregrino.<\/p>\n Cuando llegu\u00e9 al albergue tuve que esperar a que viniera una recepcionista para hacer el check-in. Mientras la esperaba, me encontr\u00e9 con Jessica y Richard, peregrinos de los Pa\u00edses Bajos, Amsterdam. Despu\u00e9s de una charla amistosa, decidimos concertar una cita para una breve entrevista. \u00a1Jessica decidi\u00f3 hacer el Camino con su padre Amstelveen que tiene 75 a\u00f1os!<\/p>\n Vale\u2026 entonces ? \u00bfD\u00f3nde empezaste el Camino?<\/strong><\/p>\n Hemos comenzado nuestro Camino en Oporto, Portugal.<\/p>\n \u00bfCu\u00e1l fue el motivo por el que decidiste hacer el Camino?<\/strong><\/p>\n Jessica: Mi padre Amstelveen quer\u00eda hacer el Camino hace 2 a\u00f1os, pero luego \u201cpas\u00f3\u201d el COVID-19, as\u00ed que no pudo hacerlo. Y finalmente este a\u00f1o mi hija estuvo unos d\u00edas en Oporto, Portugal. Yo tambi\u00e9n estuve all\u00ed y durante ese tiempo conoc\u00ed a algunos peregrinos. Y fue el momento en el que me di cuenta \u00a1Es posible volver a hacer el Camino de Santiago! Hablamos con mi padre, e hicimos el plan de nuestro Camino. La planificaci\u00f3n en s\u00ed tom\u00f3 alrededor de 2 meses y \u00a1ahora estamos aqu\u00ed! ?<\/p>\n Richard: Tengo 75 a\u00f1os. \u00bfCu\u00e1ndo hacerlo si no es ahora? Ten\u00eda una amiga que llevaba demasiado tiempo planeando hacer Camino y ahora lamentablemente no puede hacerlo. Es demasiado tarde\u2026<\/p>\n \u00bfQu\u00e9 te gusta del Camino?<\/strong><\/p>\n Richard: Me encanta estar afuera todo el d\u00eda y sentir buena energ\u00eda para caminar. \u00a1Es incre\u00edble sentir que tu cuerpo puede hacerlo! Y, por supuesto, siempre es agradable conocer a otras personas.<\/p>\n \u00bfHay algo que no te guste del Camino?<\/strong><\/p>\n Richard y Jessica: albergues con exceso de reservas.<\/p>\n Yo: ah, eso es verdad. Not\u00e9 los carteles de “completo” en las ventanas del albergue. Jaja, si vienes a Lal\u00edn, no tienes que preocuparte por los hostales llenos ?<\/p>\n De todos modos\u2026 \u00bfPuedes compartir alguna experiencia o aventura que te haya ocurrido en el Camino?<\/strong><\/p>\n Richard: En el lugar de descanso, encontramos una guitarra. Empec\u00e9 a tocar (Richard muestra el video) y luego se me uni\u00f3 otro peregrino con un ukelele incre\u00edble. La gente que pasaba se deten\u00eda a escuchar y lo pasamos muy bien todos juntos.<\/p>\n \u00bfC\u00f3mo supiste del Camino?<\/strong><\/p>\n Richard: Lo s\u00e9 desde hace mucho tiempo. Seguramente lo he le\u00eddo en alg\u00fan libro…<\/p>\n \u00bfQu\u00e9 opinas de los albergues para peregrinos?<\/strong><\/p>\n Jesica: Son buenos. Los peregrinos que se alojan all\u00ed son realmente respetuosos y considerados. Obviamente, a veces no es tan c\u00f3modo porque alguien est\u00e1 tosiendo o roncando, pero entendemos que no es un hotel. En general, estamos muy contentos con nuestra experiencia.<\/p>\n Yo: Gracias por vuestro tiempo y por compartir vuestra historia conmigo ?<\/p>\n Hablamos un poco m\u00e1s y nos deseamos lo mejor. \nWe have started our Camino in Porto, Portugal.<\/em><\/p>\n
\nJessica<\/span>: My father Amstelveen wanted to do the Camino 2 years ago, but then COVID-19 “happened”, so he couldn’t do it. And then finally this year my daughter did a few days in Camino in Porto, Portugal. I was there too and during that time I met some pilgrims. And It was the time when I realized It is possible to walk the Camino de Santiago again! We talked with my father, and made the plan for our Camino. The planning itself took around 2 months and now we are here! \ud83d\ude42<\/em>
\nRichard<\/span>: I’m 75. When to do it if not now? I had a friend who was planning to do Camino for too long and now unfortunately she is not able to do it. It’s too late…<\/em><\/p>\n
\nRichard<\/span>: I love to be outside all day and to feel good energy to walk. It is amazing to feel that your body can do it! And of course, it’s always nice to meet other people.<\/em><\/p>\n
\nRichard & Jessica<\/span>: overbooked hostels. <\/em>
\nMe<\/span>: oh, that’s true. I noticed the labels “completo” on the hostel windows. Haha, if you come to Lal\u00edn, you don’t have to worry about overbooked hostels \ud83d\ude09<\/em><\/p>\n
\nRichard<\/span>: At the resting place, we found a guitar. I started playing (Richard shows the video) and then another pilgrim with an amazing ukelele joined me. People who were passing by stopped to listen and we had a lovely time all together. <\/em><\/p>\n
\nRichard<\/span>: I know about it for a very long time. I probably have read about it in a book…<\/em><\/p>\n
\nJesicca<\/span>: They are good. Pilgrims who stay there are really respectful and thoughtful. Obviously, sometimes it is not as comfortable because someone is coughing or snoring, but we understand it is not a hotel. Overall, we are really happy with our experience.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
