??\u00a0 In these past two days we\u2019ve accompanied the group of Ascm of inclusive pilgrimage, a group of people with physical disabilities in the first lap of their English way from Ferrol to Pontedeume.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The team was made of five people with various disabilities with their special equipment and a family member or friend as a helper for each of them, then there were some volunteers from the association and us volunteers from xacobeando.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We began from the starting point near the pilgrim office in Ferrol, and the first part was quite easy, three of them had an electric wheelchair, one them had a special horizontal bike with three wheels adapted to her movement necessities, and one had an electric wheelchair with one more wheel in the front with handlebars as a bike to to make the movement easier. The parts in the road were quite accessible except sometimes for ramps to and from the platform. The hardest part in the first day from Ferrol to Fene were the sections in nature, where the floor wasn\u2019t paved and the wheels often got stuck between the rocks or slipped on them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mostly we helped when there were steep climbs and they needed a push because the electric wheelchairs were really heavy, but when there were just obstacles the people in the association took care of them because they had more experience with the equipement so sometimes I felt a bit useless but with time I understood that when they need help they will ask for it and it\u2019s also important just to be there for them, without do anything special.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The language was the other barrier we had to face, they spoke only spanish and I spoke only italian and english so communicating was difficult but Italian is similar to spanish so when they were speaking could understand the context and some of the things but it was really difficult for me to respond or ask questions. With some of them who spoke a little bit of english we had fun talking and teaching me spanish but for the rest of the time I just watched and listened. I believe that this taught me a lot about their perspective that probably if I got distracted talking I wouldn\u2019t have been caught, so sometimes not all evils come to harm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second day we went from Fene to Pontedeume. The first part was really challenging because we had to climb some hills, with rocky soil and the wheelchairs got stuck much more often and in some cases we used a rope to pull them out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On many occasions they were in four or five to push just one person, and all the time they were thanking us. This had me thinking of the psychological part of having a disability and not being able to be independent.\u00a0 I thought how difficult it can be for someone to depend on someone else for most of the time, and be grateful all the time to the people around you to do basic stuff.<\/span><\/p>\n

So in the end this experience has taught me that it\u2019s important to be there for these people, to improve their surroundings so they can be as independent as possible, and sometimes too much help it\u2019s not needed, so the best thing we can do is listen and watch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

??\u00a0En estos dos \u00faltimos d\u00edas hemos acompa\u00f1ado al grupo de Ascm de peregrinaci\u00f3n inclusiva, un grupo de personas con discapacidad f\u00edsica en la primera vuelta de su camino ingl\u00e9s de Ferrol a Pontedeume.<\/p>\n

El equipo estaba formado por cinco personas con diversas discapacidades con su equipo especial y un familiar o amigo como ayudante de cada uno de ellos, luego estaban algunos voluntarios de la asociaci\u00f3n y nosotros los voluntarios de xacobeando.<\/p>\n

Comenzamos desde el punto de partida cerca de la oficina del peregrino en Ferrol, y la primera parte fue bastante f\u00e1cil, tres de ellos ten\u00edan una silla de ruedas el\u00e9ctrica, uno ten\u00eda una bicicleta horizontal especial con tres ruedas adaptada a sus necesidades de movimiento, y uno ten\u00eda una silla de ruedas el\u00e9ctrica. Silla de ruedas con una rueda m\u00e1s delante con manillar a modo de bicicleta para facilitar el desplazamiento. Las partes de la carretera eran bastante accesibles, excepto a veces por rampas hacia y desde la plataforma. Lo m\u00e1s duro del primer d\u00eda de Ferrol a Fene fueron los tramos en plena naturaleza, donde el suelo no estaba asfaltado y las ruedas a menudo se atascaban entre las rocas o resbalaban sobre ellas.<\/p>\n

Mayormente ayud\u00e1bamos cuando hab\u00eda subidas empinadas y necesitaban un empuj\u00f3n porque las sillas de ruedas el\u00e9ctricas eran muy pesadas, pero cuando hab\u00eda obst\u00e1culos, la gente de la asociaci\u00f3n se ocupaba de ellos porque ten\u00edan m\u00e1s experiencia con el equipo, as\u00ed que a veces me sent\u00eda un poco in\u00fatil pero con el tiempo entend\u00ed que cuando necesitan ayuda la piden y tambi\u00e9n es importante estar ah\u00ed para ellos, sin hacer nada especial.<\/p>\n

El idioma fue la otra barrera que tuvimos que enfrentar, ellos solo hablaban espa\u00f1ol y yo solo hablaba italiano e ingl\u00e9s, por lo que comunicarse era dif\u00edcil, pero el italiano es similar al espa\u00f1ol, por lo que cuando hablaban pod\u00edan entender el contexto y algunas de las cosas, pero era realmente dif\u00edcil para m\u00ed responder o hacer preguntas. Con algunos de ellos que hablaban un poco de ingl\u00e9s, nos divert\u00edamos hablando y ense\u00f1\u00e1ndome espa\u00f1ol, pero el resto del tiempo solo miraba y escuchaba. Creo que esto me ense\u00f1\u00f3 mucho sobre su perspectiva de que probablemente si me distrajera hablando no me habr\u00edan atrapado, as\u00ed que a veces no todos los males salen mal.<\/p>\n

El segundo d\u00eda fuimos de Fene a Pontedeume. La primera parte fue muy desafiante porque tuvimos que subir algunas colinas, con suelo rocoso y las sillas de ruedas se atascaban mucho m\u00e1s seguido y en algunos casos us\u00e1bamos una cuerda para sacarlas.<\/p>\n

En muchas ocasiones estaban en cuatro o cinco para empujar a una sola persona, y todo el tiempo nos estaban dando las gracias. Esto me hizo pensar en la parte psicol\u00f3gica de tener una discapacidad y no poder ser independiente. Pens\u00e9 en lo dif\u00edcil que puede ser para alguien depender de otra persona la mayor parte del tiempo y estar agradecido todo el tiempo con las personas que lo rodean para hacer cosas b\u00e1sicas.<\/p>\n

As\u00ed que al final esta experiencia me ha ense\u00f1ado que es importante estar ah\u00ed para estas personas, mejorar su entorno para que puedan ser lo m\u00e1s independientes posible, y a veces demasiada ayuda no es necesaria, as\u00ed que lo mejor que podemos hacer es escuchar. y ver.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
