Ah, where to start… I genuinely didn’t know what to expect from this project or volunteering in general, as this was my first time. The experiences I’ve had, the friends that I’ve made and the memories that I will forever have is something I’m so, so thankful for.<\/p>\n

At first, I didn’t know anything about Camino de Santiago or Galicia, but as I dwelled more in to the project and Galicia, I thought – “Hey, it could be a great experience!” which it definitely was. I found this project thanks to my friend who suggested it, who has also been a volunteer only in Georgia. I applied quite late, but thankfully was accepted anyway which was a big surprise for me!<\/p>\n

When I first arrived, the culture shock was definitely there. The eating times, fiestas and siestas, using only cash on city bus’ and not to mention other things, haha. Actually, on the first day I got lost, walking in circles, around Don Bosco center when one of the coordinators found me! I was greeted nicely and felt a warm attitude from everyone! As time went on we had a training for a few days, during that time I made great friendships!<\/p>\n

Later.. We had to separate and go to our soon-to-be homes and start volunteering! I was put in a small town called Tui, on the border with Portugal. In Camino Portugu\u00e9s.<\/em> I met the people I was going to live with for the next 2 months, 5 lovely volunteers from all around the EU and of course our coordinators (which we had 2 of).<\/p>\n

The activities and volunteering jobs that we all did, were of course.. voluntary. From working with children, to working with disabled people, cleaning the Camino and working in the Pilgrim Hostel… Where I was greeted with warmth every day! At first, I wasn’t too excited working in the hostel as I haven’t done a receptionist type of job.. but as time went on, I grew to like it.<\/p>\n

Outside of volunteering, in my free time, I travelled all around Galicia.. even to Portugal – Santiago, Pontevedra, Vigo, Caminha and Porto to name a few.. as I am someone who loves travelling, this for me was a lovely experience, one I will forever cherish.<\/p>\n

It’s been 2 months, I still can’t believe it. It felt like I lived here forever.. because of the many experiences I’ve had. As for the Camino, I think it will forever be a part of me, as I think I will be a part of it too. The impact this project has had on me is good, I grew to be more confident.. prepared for the unexpected. Learned about different cultures, different ways of living, learned new phrases in Spanish and Galician..of course had some good wine and great food, haha!<\/p>\n

Ah, por d\u00f3nde empezar… Realmente no sab\u00eda qu\u00e9 esperar de este proyecto o del voluntariado en general, ya que era mi primera vez. Las experiencias que he tenido, los amigos que he hecho y los recuerdos que siempre tendr\u00e9 es algo por lo que estoy muy, muy agradecido.<\/p>\n

Al principio, no sab\u00eda nada sobre el Camino de Santiago o Galicia, pero a medida que profundizaba m\u00e1s en el proyecto y Galicia, pens\u00e9: “\u00a1Oye, podr\u00eda ser una gran experiencia!” que definitivamente lo era. Encontr\u00e9 este proyecto gracias a mi amigo que me lo sugiri\u00f3, quien tambi\u00e9n ha sido voluntario solo en Georgia. Present\u00e9 mi solicitud bastante tarde, pero afortunadamente me aceptaron de todos modos, \u00a1lo cual fue una gran sorpresa para m\u00ed!<\/p>\n

Cuando llegu\u00e9 por primera vez, el choque cultural definitivamente estaba ah\u00ed. Las horas de comida, fiestas y siestas, usando solo dinero en efectivo en el autob\u00fas de la ciudad y por no hablar de otras cosas, jaja. De hecho, el primer d\u00eda me perd\u00ed, caminando en c\u00edrculos, alrededor del centro Don Bosco cuando uno de los coordinadores me encontr\u00f3. \u00a1Me recibieron muy bien y sent\u00ed una actitud c\u00e1lida de parte de todos! Conforme fue pasando el tiempo tuvimos una formaci\u00f3n por unos d\u00edas, durante ese tiempo hice grandes amistades!<\/p>\n

M\u00e1s tarde… \u00a1Tuvimos que separarnos e ir a nuestros futuros hogares y comenzar a ser voluntarios! Me pusieron en un peque\u00f1o pueblo llamado Tui, en la frontera con Portugal. En el Camino Portugu\u00e9s. Conoc\u00ed a las personas con las que iba a vivir durante los pr\u00f3ximos 2 meses, 5 encantadores voluntarios de toda la UE y, por supuesto, a nuestros coordinadores (de los cuales ten\u00edamos 2).<\/p>\n

Las actividades y trabajos de voluntariado que todos hicimos, fueron por supuesto… voluntarios. Desde trabajar con ni\u00f1os, trabajar con personas discapacitadas, limpiar el Camino y trabajar en el Albergue de Peregrinos… \u00a1D\u00f3nde me recibieron con calidez todos los d\u00edas! Al principio, no estaba muy emocionado de trabajar en el albergue ya que no hab\u00eda hecho un trabajo de recepcionista… pero con el paso del tiempo, me empez\u00f3 a gustar.<\/p>\n

Fuera del voluntariado, en mi tiempo libre, viaj\u00e9 por toda Galicia… incluso a Portugal – Santiago, Pontevedra, Vigo, Caminha y Oporto por nombrar algunos… como soy una persona a la que le encanta viajar, esto para m\u00ed fue una experiencia encantadora , que siempre apreciar\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Han pasado 2 meses, todav\u00eda no puedo creerlo. Me sent\u00ed como si viviera aqu\u00ed desde siempre… debido a las muchas experiencias que he tenido. En cuanto al Camino, creo que siempre formar\u00e1 parte de m\u00ed, como creo que yo tambi\u00e9n ser\u00e9 parte de \u00e9l. El impacto que ha tenido este proyecto en m\u00ed es bueno, crec\u00ed con m\u00e1s confianza… preparado para lo inesperado. Aprend\u00ed sobre diferentes culturas, diferentes formas de vivir, aprend\u00ed nuevas frases en espa\u00f1ol y gallego… por supuesto, tom\u00e9 un buen vino y una buena comida, \u00a1jaja!<\/p>\n
