Accessible Camino in Arzua

?? On the 8th of September we had the opportunity to try what it’s like to walk the camino for people with disabilities. We had three different tasks: walking blindly, with crutches and in a wheelchair, but also as a support person for the previously mentioned roles.

From my experience, the most difficult part was to walk the camino blindly. I felt a bit claustrophobic and unsafe at some places – for example crossing a river or walking downhill or knowing there are ditches on both sides of the road, even though the support person was great.

The wheelchair part wasn’t that bad, but we did find some difficulties. For example getting into the albergue or getting water from the fountain. Also the Arzua town is not really wheelchair friendly and because of that I can’t even imagine how difficult it must be on the forest roads.

Walking with crutches was also quite challenging for me because it was my first time trying them. But they were way more  manoeuvrable than the wheelchair so that was good.

I now also understand the stress behind being a support person for blind people. I felt a lot of responsibility to make sure the “blind” person doesn’t get hurt.

?? El 8 de septiembre tuvimos la oportunidad de probar cómo es hacer el camino para personas con alguna discapacidad. Teníamos tres tareas diferentes: caminar a ciegas, con muletas y en silla de ruedas, pero también como persona de apoyo para los roles mencionados anteriormente.

Desde mi experiencia, la parte más difícil fue hacer el camino a ciegas. Me sentí un poco claustrofóbica e insegura en algunos lugares, por ejemplo, cruzar un río, caminar cuesta abajo o saber que hay zanjas a ambos lados de la carretera, a pesar de que la persona que me apoyó fue excelente.

La parte de la silla de ruedas no estuvo tan mal, pero encontramos algunas dificultades. Por ejemplo entrar al albergue o sacar agua de la fuente. Además, el pueblo de Arzúa no es realmente apto para sillas de ruedas y por eso ni siquiera puedo imaginar lo difícil que debe ser en los caminos del bosque.

Caminar con muletas también fue bastante desafiante para mí porque era la primera vez que las probaba. Pero eran mucho más maniobrables que la silla de ruedas, así que estaba bien.

Ahora también entiendo el estrés que hay detrás de ser una persona de apoyo para las personas ciegas. Sentí mucha responsabilidad de asegurarme de que la persona “ciega” no se lastime.
