Símbolos de riqueza

“De aquella quien tenía un burro es como el que ahora tiene un mercedes”

Es con esta comparación que comienza nuestra conversación sobre los símbolos de prosperidad en una sociedad agrícola. Nuestros interlocutores mencionan la inmensa riqueza y reconocimiento social que supuso para una familia la adquisición de un burro, el impacto que tuvo en sus ingresos, en la eficiencia de su trabajo… También mencionan cómo este símbolo se ha desgastado por completo en estos días.

-Sin embargo, hoy no quieres el burro porque significa mucho trabajo, dice M.

-Hoy en día los burros andan sueltos porque nadie los quiere, añade P.

“Después vino la bicicleta que iban con sus novias detrás en el sillín y la novia de lado” (todos se ríen)

Otro símbolo de riqueza era el directamente relacionado con la cantidad de alimentos disponibles y almacenados por familia. Cuanto más grande era el granero, más comida se almacenaba en su interior, más rica era la familia propietaria. Lo mismo funcionó con el pajar.

“During those times having a donkey was equivalent to having a mercedes nowadays.”

It is with this comparison that our conversation about the symbols of prosperity in an agricultural society starts. Our interlocutors mention the immense wealth and social recognition the acquisition of a donkey meant for a family, the impact it had to their income, to  the efficiency of their work… They also mention how this symbol has been completely worn out these days. 

-Yet, today you don’t want the donkey because it means a lot of work, says M.

-Nowadays donkeys are hanging around free because no one wants them, adds P. 

“Then the motorcycle arrived and guys were driving with their girlfriends seated at the back” (they all laugh) 

Another symbol of wealth was that directly related to the amount of food that was available and stored per family. The bigger the granary was, the more food was stored inside, the wealthier the family that owned it was. The same worked with the haystack.
